I was sad to learn of the passing of my cousin Lorne De Jersey on Tuesday, November 11, 2025 at Pinecrest Nursing Home in Bobcaygeon, at age 73. Lorne was my adopted mother’s nephew. Her uncle was Bert DeJersey Lorne’s father, so Lorne was my cousin. Photo of me and Lorne is attached. I have many memories of Lorne’s family that included his mother Marion and his older brother Ray DeJersey. Lorne’s Obituary noticed stated; “Lorne was a lifelong farmer, and he spent his years working side by side with his father as dairy farmers, all while faithfully tending to the land they cherished.” Lorne and I were the same age and we had a family connection held together by some very thin threads through the years. My grandmother Laura Jane Margison (DeJersey) and my mother Laura Winnifred Kehoe (Lorne’s aunt Winnie) whispered to me from heaven to check in on Lorne from time to time and visit him when I came to Ontario from my adult home in Alberta. I always sent Bert & Lorne a Christmas card and called Lorne from time to time after his dad passed. We were from totally different backgrounds and environments, but we had that connection via the two Lauras picture attached. As children, my brother John Patrick Kehoe and I would visit the DeJersey family dairy farm that was located between Woodville and Oakwood not far from Ontario Hwy #46. I have memories of playing in the big barn up on the stacked bales of hay, touching an electric fence and climbing on tractors. Lorne’s older brother Raymond DeJersey tied a very young calf to a plow in the farmyard as an electrical storm approached. Lightning struck the plough and ran over to Ray as he secured the calf. It violently knocked him over and burned him. He was never the same after that incident. When Lorne and I would around 11 or 12 years old, Aunt Marion had a beautiful big Collie dog on the farm. Lorne’s mother, an epileptic, was tragically killed one evening in the family kitchen in the early sixties. As she was cleaning up after dinner, she had an epileptic spell and as she was falling to the kitchen floor, Uncle Bert lunged to catch her and break her fall. The Colie dog thinking that Uncle Bert was going to hurt Aunt Marion attacked him but instead of biting Bert, the dog bit Marion on the neck and she quickly died in Uncle Bert’s arms. The boys cleaned up the blood and it was a sad time for everyone. The day of the funeral Aunt Marion was laid to rest at the nearby Cannington cemetery. Everyone gathered at the farmhouse afterwards, my mother was devastated. The Collie dog was tied to a fence post in the farmyard. There was an OOP member there that afternoon. Uncle Bert talked to him, the officer drew his sidearm and quickly shot the dog dead on the spot. Farm life…it was a different era. I remember visiting the farm with my mother many times as she would clean their house and do their laundry after Marion died. Bert, Lorne and Ray would visit us near Bolsover, a 25-minute drive from the farm for Sunday dinners in the summer and fall. They were fit and tanned with lily white foreheads and hard-working dairy farmers. Lorne had no family but had many friends in Lindsay Ontario. The two Lauras are looking down on those friends from heaven and sending love. They guide my keyboard strokes as I write this remembrance. Rest in Peace cousin Lorne. Very sad to hear about Lorne’s passing. He was the kindest person. My dad was Lorne’s cousin so I was lucky enough to visit the farm every summer from a toddler. Lorne was always so kind and a real common sense kind of guy. Always smiling. One summer when I was in my teens, I stayed with them for a week to see what it’s like. It was so great. I thought I was in shape until I helped out there. Let’s just say I slept well. Lorne and uncle Bert were amazing to hang around. Very funny and great cooks. I’m for ever grateful knowing Lorne Love John ❤️

Lorne was a great neighbour and always willing to help fellow farmers when they needed help. Have many great memories of Lorne helping my family with harvest and joining us for meals. Conversation was always lively.

Every time my Grandparents Bill and Joanne would go away on a trip, I most enjoyed taking Lorne out to breakfast or supper at Neabors Restaurant. His smile and laugh will always be with me, telling me stories of his youth, and always caring for how I’m doing. He effortlessly made my day and night. I’ll miss coming to get you for breakfast and hearing your stories. Love forever, Jacob.

I have fond memories of Lorne, sitting with him while he enjoyed his breakfast at Neabors and the many family dinners celebrating Christmases and Thanksgiving’s at the Konkle house. Lorne was always very gracious and would always have a story to tell. May he rest in peace, Christine Mcgahey
