My sincerest sympathies on Clare's passing. I had the honor of getting to know Clare and Nora not only while working for the Brock Citizen but also during my time spent as a member of the Cannington Lioness Club. He was always so friendly and knowledgeable. I knew if I had a question or needed an answer, that I could call him and he'd either be able to provide me with what I was seeking or direct me to someone who would. I'm sad to hear of his passing, but rejoice in the certainty that he is with our Lord now. His loss will be deeply felt for years to come. Those whose paths we're fortunate to cross in this journey we are all making leave footprints on our hearts and souls. When they move on, they are never truly gone. They live on in our memories; in the laughter or their children; in the smiles of their grandchildren; in the happy remembrances of times spent together; and, in the stories we share for generations recounting the deeds of those who made our lives a bit better just by being who they were. Our greatest hope is that when we pass on, we too will have touched others in that same precious way. I'm glad for the brief moment when my path crossed with Clare's. He was definitely a great asset to his community.

Remembering Clare Bagshaw
Farmer, politician and volunteer died Tuesday night
The late Clare Bagshaw. Clare was known to help out anyone who needed it, providing a strong role model to his four children. Courtesy of the Bagshaw family
"He was a great role model. He'd always drop what he was doing to help someone else."
A passionate farmer. A hands-on politician. A tireless volunteer. A loving family man.
Those are just some of the ways that Cannington-area resident Clare Bagshaw is being remembered after his death Tuesday (May 22) following a brief illness.
But those closest to his heart need few words to sum up his 88 years.
"He was a good man," said Barbara McIntosh, the youngest of Mr. Bagshaw's four children, her voice cracking with emotion.
"We were always so proud of him," added Gwen St. John, her older sister, dabbing tears from her eyes.
He was a "born farmer," according to his wife of 61 years, Nora. And not just in a figurative sense -- he was born on the family farm on Concession 10 in December 1923.
When his father died suddenly in 1953, Mr. Bagshaw assumed the mantle and continued to run the farm until 1978, when the family moved into the village. But he still dabbled, renting various plots in the area and purchasing a small property near Woodville where he kept cattle.
But no matter how busy he was with work around the farm, Mr. Bagshaw always made an effort to spend time with his children, including sons Ed and Don.
"He loved his family beyond words," Ms McIntosh said.
In addition to his four children, Mr. Bagshaw had 12 grandchildren and three great-granddaughters.
"My daughter is having a son in seven weeks -- I wish he could have seen his first great-grandson," Ms St. John said.
He was as dedicated to his community as he was to his family.
Mr. Bagshaw was a member of the Brock Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years and the Cannington Lions Club for more than 30. He also volunteered with the Brock office of Community Care Durham for more than two decades, driving local seniors to medical appointments.
"He was always looking for ways to give back to the community," Ms Bagshaw said.
One of those ways was serving on Township council.
Mr. Bagshaw was the Ward 3 councillor for two terms, from 1985 to 1991, and never hesitated to lend a hand when a constituent called with an issue.
Ms Bagshaw laughingly recalls the time that a local resident called in the middle of the night about a local path that was covered in ice. Instead of passing the matter off to Township staff, Mr. Bagshaw rolled out of bed, bundled up and trekked out to lay down salt.
"He was a great role model. He'd always drop what he was doing to help someone else," Ms St. John said.
"Everything he did, he did to the best of his ability," Ms McIntosh added.
To mark his contribution to the community, Brock Township nominated Mr. Bagshaw for the provincial government's Senior of the Year Award just a few short weeks ago.
"Mr. Bagshaw has worn many hats and contributed in different ways to his communityâ?¦Clare has always selflessly given his time. Future generations have much to learn by the example (he) set," reads the nomination form submitted by the Township.
His nomination came at the suggestion of Ward 4 councillor Keith Shier, who referred to him Wednesday afternoon as a "hard-working farmer, great volunteer and an excellent politician."
"He believed in being fair with everyone he dealt with. He will be missed," Coun. Shier said.
"He gave generously to the community and always stepped up when called on," added Ward 3 councillor Walter Schummer, who served alongside Mr. Bagshaw as a Lions Club member.
Visitation will be held at Thorne Funeral Home in Cannington on Friday (May 25) from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Trinity United Church in Cannington at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

I will always remember Clare for helping us get through a minor variance three days before our wedding at my future husband's property. The neighbours were understandably upset as they didn't know what our plans really were and we were upset because we didn't understand the process. We had never met Clare before but his friend, the late Lorne Graham said that Clare Bagshaw would be at the meeting and he would know just how to get that variance passed. Clare stood up at the meeting demanding if the committee "wanted to stop these young people from farming?". He was so dedicated, so passionate and so caring about helping us get permission to get that goat barn built because he knew exactly how important this barn was to me. From then on, whenever I saw Clare in Cannington he expected a hug- and he got one for 12 years right up until a few weeks ago. Cannington won't be quite the same without Clare.

Cannington has lost a man of faith, family, and community. I have been thinking of the decade plus in which I have known Clare and served Cannington with him in The Lions Club. I am very proud to have known him. His wisdom, selflessness, and personality will never be replaced and will always be remembered. His goal was to give back more than he ever received whether it was to his family, those in need, or The Township through his service on Council. All of this took place while Clare thought only of others. Thank you for all you did Clare. Your community will always be in debt to you.

Dear Nora: I was saddened to hear of Clare's passing. I spoke with him on the street just a week or so ago. That day we joked as to how lucky we were "our feet were on the right side of the earth". One never knows what God has in store for us. Such a nice man, quiet spoken and sincere. He will be truly missed by all. Take care in knowing you can call on anyone of your friends for help or even just a visit. We will all be here for you. Linda English

Dear Nora and family, I am very sad to hear about Clare after just returning from Ontario to help mom. The Bagshaw family has a special place in my heart and Clare and Nora you were like second parents. Rarely, did I come East without our quick lunch or even a picnic over to the Lions Park. I always enjoyed my visits with you both as we reminisced about days gone by and you filled me in about the many new arrivals in the clan! The farm had a place in all our hearts and was always in our thoughts and discussions. I know how the current condition of the farm was hard on Clare. Clare was one of the most honest heartfelt people I know. His integrity and community caring was an inspiration to me and probably had influence for my strong comitment to Rotary.I have met so many people over the years that new Clare through his being Councilman, Masons, Lions etc. etc. Yes, even over at Beaverton. Moms neighbour John Grant was touched by Clare in both the Masons and on Council. I guess the one blessing is that Clare lived a full life, left us in a hurry, but did not suffer. I wish I could have given him a hug and said goodbye! My heart will always be with you both Nora. I will call in the next few weeks when your up to a call and you will see me soon, so keep the tea pot warm! Love, Garry Gray
