Ms. Malcolm was my teacher for grades 4 and 5, not to mention gym teacher during younger grades and coach for everything. I never excelled in volleyball or basketball but I did in cross country. I will never forget competing at the Civic and seeing her at the finish line cheering me on at the top of her lungs.
We shared the same musical tastes and it is because of her I came to love Shania and classic Mariah Carey songs so much. She always had music on in the classroom, which made the day so much more fun.
We always thought she had such a cool car, the black Bonneville with the tinted windows. It was always so exciting when I got the chance to ride in it.
When I graduated grade 8, one of our assignments was to write a letter to the teacher who influenced us the most in our public school career. I clearly chose Ms. Malcolm she sent me a thank you card and soon after I saw her and she told me she cried when she read it and hugged me. I still have the card.
I did not end up becoming a teacher, but from the time I meet her until I was about 16 I planned on being a teacher because I wanted to be just like her.
The world has lost an amazing person, my favourite teacher and childhood hero... Laura Malcolm.
