Kit Carrothers posted a condolence

My three sisters and I stayed with relatives while our parents moved to Thornhill in 1968. When they collected us up and brought us to our new home, we met Robin and some of the other neighbourhood children in our driveway.
It was the summer that Robin and I were eight years old.
We walked to school together on the first day of Grade 3. We did a lot of things together. We laughed; we cried; we fought; we made up. We were 8 years old together, and ten, and twelve, and fourteen. We were mostly outside - in a pool, in a field, in a tree, on a bike. We lived in and out of each other's houses in those days.
We went to my cottage and slept in her backyard. We watched horror movies and studied for our first exams. We rode snowmobiles; and played hide and seek and bloody knuckles, and Blue Gorilla. We never really knew who made up Blue Gorilla.
Robin was little and smart and beautiful and funny. She loved dogs and cats and birds and gerbils, and rescued baby bunnies. She was fearless of axe murderers and bogeymen and terrified of spiders. She could draw and paint and write poetry. She couldn't spell - like her Dad - and she looked like her Mum. She had a beautiful blonde baby sister who my grandmother always marvelled was like a china doll. Eventually, there were ten kids in my family, so having just one little sister was a marvel to me.
Our house had enough kids to play a game - any game. Robin's house had moose antlers, tarantulas and South American beetles. Our house had a dog and a grown-ups' living room and a kids' TV room. Robin's house had dogs, cats, birds and a full-access living room you could even eat in.
A school friend wrote to Jeff the other day that remembering Robin made her think of Pop Tarts. And it's true enough! In those days, you didn't find a Pop Tart in every pantry. But if you slept over at Robin's, there were Pop Tarts; and there was breakfast in bed!
After our first year of high school, Robin's family moved to Stouffville. It was the summer we were 15 years old.
Stouffville was pretty far into the country for girls who couldn't drive. But we got our licenses soon enough and always stayed in touch. After high school, Robin's family moved to Miami and Robin ran her Dad's office there. I got a job in Toronto and visited her down south when I could.
In the spring of 1983, we planned a trip with another friend. The three of us left for Europe for a summer of back-packing and revelry.
It was the summer we were twenty-three.
We saw a lot of new places that summer and met some new friends. We stayed with Cathy's cousins in Scotland and Wendy's sister in Shoreham-by-Sea. We rode in planes and trains and boats and cars. We carried our clothes on our backs and stood in front of the Coliseum and Big Ben and the Eiffel Tower. We slept in the Black Forest and woke up with giant slug trails on all of our sleeping bags. We sampled German beer and Swiss chocolate and Greek wine and French cheese. We wore out our jeans and our shoes and we laughed until we couldn't breathe. We put on a lot of miles.
At the end of that summer, I stayed in London, England; Cathy went back to Hamilton; and Robin went home to Miami. The following year, Robin came to London to spend an English Christmas with me, and the year after that we both moved back to Ontario.
Robin lived in Markham for awhile, in Toronto for a short time, and then moved to Wagg Road near Goodwood. Robin had boyfriends over the years, but then she met a guy from Uxbridge and she fell in love. Jeff was good-looking and hard-working and smart and kind. But I think Robin fell in love with him because he made her laugh. Robin had a quirky sense of humour and most of all she could laugh at herself. And she had a profound fondness for irony.
Robin and Jeff got married and moved to Woodville and raised two beautiful kids. There are a million more memories over the next 15 years. But I'll stop now, and when you talk with Jeff and Shandel and Jordan, they can fill you in from here.
I have three sisters and two brothers of my own. But Robin is my sister, too. We grew up in each others' families.
I will always remember Robin laughing.
Robin and I walked to school together on the first day of Grade 3. We walked a lot of miles together over the next 42 years. And we walk together still.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die.
Mary Elizabeth Frye - 1932
