Obituary of John Tope Wagner
Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John Tope Wagner died suddenly on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at the Georgian Bay Seniors Retirement Home in Penetang. He is survived by June, his loving and devoted wife of 64 years. Loved and respected by his son Doug (Buffy), and his daughter Caroline (Jason) of B.C. Three cherished granddaughters, Lauren (Aaron) in Australia, Erin in Oakwood, Ontario and Olivia in Delta, B.C. He will be missed by 3 generations of nieces and nephews. Brother to Barbara in Alpharetta, Georgia.
John, in his formative years was an outstanding Boy Scout, received the King Scout award and went on further to leadership. He gained much experience working at Southam Murray and was a great influence in the organizing and printing of the Eaton’s catalogue and the Royal Winter Fair programme. Before his retirement to Georgian Bay, he contributed greatly to the community of Sunderland, Ontario. He enjoyed Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, and St. Andrews United Church. He and June owned and managed Maple Glen Printing, published and printed the Sunderland News Reporter. After closing up shop he used his talent to become the trusted and happy skate sharpener for the Sunderland Arena. John always had a smile and a joke for everyone because he loved everyone; to him your smile was his goal and pleasure.
He spent much of his retirement at his beloved cottage on Georgian Bay where he tinkered in woodworking, creating beautiful carvings and clocks. He also found a new passion for ancestry and spent many hours researching his family tree.
You will be missed us all, our Dear, Dad, Grandpa, Papa, Pops.
Because of COVID-19 a gathering will take place at a later and safer time, we hope. Memorial donations are not necessary but our thoughts are with M.S. Society. Heart & Stroke Foundation or Canadian Guide Dogs.
