Surrounded by the love of her family, Dorothy (nee VanderBent) entered into the presence of her Lord and Saviour, on May 15, 2021. Beloved wife of Edwin for 54 years (predeceased 2018). Devoted mother of David (Angelie), Janice (Rodney Newcombe) and Lisa (Robert Thiessen). Loving grandmother of Mariel (Joseph Ariwi), Madeline, Meredith, Megan, Solomon and Samuel. Daughter of Rev. William and Myrtle VanderBent of Richmond Hill. Sister of Marie, David and Bruce, all predeceased.
Dorothy graduated from the Oshawa General Hospital School of Nursing (1960). Her career spanned 35 years with a focus in surgical nursing. Dorothy was involved in various church activities including ‘Women with Spirit’, music and hospitality ministries at Fair Havens Community Church. She loved gardening, hosting dinner parties and family reunions at their home in Cannington. Dorothy had an avid interest in family history and genealogy. She is fondly remembered by her family and friends. Her faith and joyful spirit was demonstrated in her dedication as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
The family of Dorothy Barkey will receive friends at the THORNE FUNERAL HOME, 109 Laidlaw Street South in Cannington (705-432-2672) on Thursday, May 20th from 1 – 4:00 p.m. In accordance with the directives provided by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario please contact the funeral home between 9 a.m. & 5 p.m. to schedule your visitation appointment Wearing of masks or face coverings by everyone is mandatory. A private family service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, May 21, 2021. Interment Cedar Vale Cemetery.
