I am saddened to learn of “ Ronny’s” passing.
I met Ronny on my first day of Grade 4 at West Hill Public School. During recess we played a game of marbles. Unfortunately the game turned into a fist fight. Another classmate, John Stevens, broke it up and had us shake hands and apologize to each other. Thereafter Ronny and I became good friends.
In Grade 6 Ronny, Donny and I formed a band called “The Mates of Music”. While Ronny and I were taking guitar lessons at Musonic, Donny was taking drum lessons. We practiced in Wretham’s basement at the corner of Warnsworth and Morningside. As far as I can recall we put together a repertoire of two songs we thought we played reasonably well. They were “I’m Not Your Stepping Stone” by the Monkees and “Indian Giver” by Paul Revere and the Raiders. None of us wanted to sing so Ronny played the notes for the vocals while I played rhythm.
We managed to take our repertoire to a Grade 6 gig at West Hill Public School. We delivered our full repertoire about three times over. Our supportive principal, Mr Ritchie, followed us with his great jazz trumpet playing to the captive lunchtime audience.
The twins and I also shared a genuine interest in building stuff. Using sheets of plywood and some old car tires we constructed a large flatbed cart. We could load all of our musical gear onto it and push it to where we needed. I believe our next gig was in my parents garage on Weir Crescent. Again, we delivered our two “stretched” songs, this time it was to a few neighborhood kids from down the street who had heard the noise. Next stop - Wretham’s basement.
Ronny and Donny both had paper routes. I would often help them deliver papers so they could get home to the basement quicker for practice.
The twins and I maintained a strong connection through music. We would often chat in the halls at West Hill Collegiate. They had lost their desire to play after public school but I continued.
Following high school, I joined a band comprised of fellow “West Hillers” and Highland “Creekers”. We were playing a week long gig at our favorite local watering hole, “ The West Hill House”.
The band had just finished a set where I had ripped through a cover of Dire Straits “ Sultans of Swing”. (To frame this in time, this was while the song was still in the top ten on the radio). Ronny was in the bar with a bunch of friends. He came over to where I was sitting and said “Wow Brucie! That’s unbelievable how far you’ve come on the guitar.” I said “I just kept playing!”
He purchased his grandparents home down the street from my parents on Weir Crescent. I believe he was working with the Toronto Fire Department by that time and I had moved from Toronto so I didn’t see him.
Ronny had contacted me through a website called Classmates a few years ago to say that he was going to be heading to Montreal and wondered if we could get together as he was going by Kingston. I responded to him but never saw or heard from him again.
Ronny was a super guy and I wish we were able to get together. RIP my friend. Till we meet again.

R.J, Katie and Jill. I am so sorry for the loss of Ron. I remember him fondly from my childhood days. I remember him encouraging our love of reading by giving us money every time we read a Goosebumps book and then told him what it was about!
