Dear Carley and Family:
Judith and I want to express our love and sympathy to you all. Our memories of Dent and Carley first go back to the Markham Missionary Church. They were a wonderful influence and example to us as young people. We remember Dent's warmth, smile and genuine interest in us. His laughter and ability to find the humour in life are unforgettable. His laughter was infectious and brought so much joy to many. It was a special gift to us all!
I realized today what a special memory of Dent we have in our home, so I am sharing this little story as a tribute to him. If he were here, I know he would beam and laugh at the story. In some way I trust it will trigger the memory of him being Dent - laughing - and that it will bring comfort.
When we lived in Markham and our kids were small (about 30 years ago), I built a stable out of cedar shingles. We bought a carved, wooden manger scene set that included a manger, baby Jesus and wise men and found some carved wooden camels and then some plastic sheep to complete the scene. A piece of brown fabric became the ground. We decided that some hay or straw was needed to improve the realism of the scene. So the call went out to Dent on a Saturday morning as the farm in Markham was only minutes away from our home. Dent told me where to get hay in the barn as he and Carley were not going to be around.
We got the hay!! After Christmas it went in a plastic ziplock sandwich bag for storage. And for 30 years it has been placed in the manger scene and then put back in the bag until next year.
This Christmas our 3 year-old granddaughter , Hayley , took a great interest in the manger scene on the chest in our living room. She was intrigued with the animals and the real hay! One day in the holiday she came to Grandma and said her finger was hurting her. When Grandma asked what had happened, Hayley said she had hurt it on the "holy hay."
Today I couldn't help but think how Dent would have laughed at that - the humour in life. And now each Christmas when the hay comes out, it will trigger a special memory of Dent.
Dent's hope of eternal life is now his reality. We pray that this will bring comfort and hope for each of you.

I worked with Dent in the Awana program at C.B.C. and I got to know him during the 17 year period in whcih I was involved in this program. The kids all loved Dent and he loved them. When I think of faithfulness, I don't believe he ever missed a week at his post and I can still hear him as he shouted at many of these weekly meetings: "Give me an A. Give me a W. Give me an A. Give me an N. Give me another A.... "AWANA" and I can still hear the kids as they shouted out the letters in response. He taught them so many lessons by his own example of his love for God, his honesty, humility, love of country and steadfastness being among many of his other attributes. I consider it a real honor to have known and worked with Dent. He touched many lives including my own and I look forward to seeing him again in Heaven one day. In the meantime, he will be missed by many people.

We always will remember Dent as the guy with the socks. Dent was one of our favourites when we attended the Cannington Baptist Church- and he was a conservative dressed guy- except for his socks. He wore wild socks and one day they were bright red and wilder then usual when I commented on his socks. He just gave me that big smile and lifted his pant leg a little higher to show just how wild they really were. Every time we saw him after that I asked to see his socks- and always they were a little on the wild side. We will meet Dent again and then I will ask again "why" he wore those wild socks down here and I'll see his beautiful smile. I expect Dent is now talking to dear little Gertie Weavers, another one of the great people that have went to Heaven that we met at the C. B. C.
God Bless the Brown Family at this time of waiting to be re-united above the sky. Sincerely, Cathy and John Hill, Beaverton

There were four of us growing up. Four siblings and a farm. This farm was worked by my Grandpa and his horses. Grandpa was often the last person we saw as we headed off to school in the morning and the first one we saw when we came home in the afternoon. Summer mornings were awakened by Grandpa whistling and calling for his horses outside my window. I can still feel and hear the pounding of their hooves as they ran to him.
I think we took Grandpa forgranted growing up because he was always there. Now, I am so thankful for just that.
