Mr .McPhail , for me , was always one with a sharp wit, an in-your-face approach ( done kindly ) and a pleasant smile. He took a genuine interest in what I was doing in and out of the classroom. After a number of years , I had him figured out ..never think too highly of oneself and do due diligence to whatever you were doing , whether that be sports , school work or just things in everyday life . I found his knowledge of history and the world in general made his classes something special. The Rickards are forever grateful for the loyalty and support he gave our father during their tenures at " Brock High " and beyond. Teachers can come and go come , but we really only remember the special ones . I will always remember Mr. McPhail . Our condolences to all his family and the many he touched .

Mr. McPhail was one of the most personable and plugged-in of all the teachers I knew at Brock back in the late 60s. He was also extremely generous with his time. I remember fondly how he spoke at my Father's funeral. My sympathies to the family. He is missed.

Dear Margaret,Barbara,Allan and Family,
I am sorry that I cannot attend your Dad's Service.
Your Dad had so many qualities. He could teach any subject and do it in a way that you could understand. He never forgot names sometimes this was good sometimes not.I think his most endearing quality was his ability to turn most conversations into a debate. He always felt out what your thoughts were and then he would take the opposite view. All the years I knew your Dad I always fell into that trap.I never came out on the winning side but it was fun and I always left our lunches knowing that I had learned something.
I feel blessed to have known your Dad,and please know that my thoughts are with you and your family at this sad time
Yours truly;
Barb(Doble)Willis

To the McPhail Family
I was just thinking of Al and how he was doing just the other day. For some reason he was very strongly on my mind. Now I know why. As already mentioned, what a wonderful person he was and my family and myself were blessed to have known him. My late father-in-law (Clayton Beers) often spoke of him with such high regards.
Al is already missed.
Sincerely
Sherry Beers

On behalf of The Royal Canadian Legion, Lloyd G.Parliament Branch 186 we would like to express our sympathy and condolences to the McPhail family, friends and comrades. Allan was a pillar in our community and was always involved in our legion Remembrances and functions. It was indeed an honour for us to host his receiving of the French Legion of Honour back in April of 2016. Allan dedicated the award to all those who served alongside him, particularly those who did not return. Allan was a true hero who served and was twice wounded overseas, spent years teaching our youth and many years serving in public office. Allan, Rest in Peace, you will be missed.

The George family wishes to send our sincere condolences to the clan McPhail for the loss of Allan.
We came to know Allan some 30 years ago through his younger brother Lorne, our neighbour and family's greatest friend. The Allan we knew was the kind, thoughtful and devoted older brother who made sure that his younger sibling lived out his life in dignity and independence despite the the challenge of being without sight.
Small details always define character. When Allan asked about your family he always did so by name, everyone's name, and the conversation would pick right up from where the last one left off, regardless of time passed. Being a man of good heart, he saw that, and appreciated it in others. While Allan had no shortage of opinions on a wide range of topics, both worldly and close to home, and was never shy to share them, he truly enjoyed a healthy discussion and debate of differing views.
Allan understood that it is the duty of those who are blessed with abilities and intelligence to give freely of those gifts to make the world around him better. Our country has lost a true hero, our community a true leader and his family and friends a wonderful, caring man. Such a life, such footprints left behind. Thank you for so much Allan, be at peace. Give Lorne a big hug for us.

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Allan for over 68 years now (yes, my entire life). Our families were close and often got together for different occasions and we had some wonderful times and good memories. He was a man of conviction, and would stand up for what he believed in. He also had a soft and caring side which we were lucky to be a part of. Allan frequently would razz me about the pool leaking at my high school (which it did), but I also think he might have had an inkling that I had written my own notes to get out of the swim class (wet, frizzy hair all day? No way!). But I must say with all honesty that what he has seen, lived through and accomplished in his lifetime is nothing but incredible and he will be missed by all. My heart goes out to the whole family.

Mr.McPhail was a huge supporter of Brock Township Public Libraries. Many Friday afternoons, he would arrive at Cannington Branch to have a chat and for his coffee and one cookie. His chats with patrons of all ages would end up as debates on a wide variety of topics including history and government. We would often end up laughing as he skillfully engaged patrons in enlightening conversations. He will be fondly remembered! Susan Ross, Retired Librarian, Cannington Public Library

RIP my good friend Allan McPhail. Brock Township has lost a great man with the passing of Allan McPhail. Allan never stopped giving to our community, as a teacher, as politician and a mentor to any young person looking for some honest advice politically or otherwise.
In 1992, as Provincial Member of Parliament, I had the distinct honour of presenting, to the former Mayor, with the Canada 125 Medal for his leadership in Brock Township.
I often turned to Allan when I was looking for his sage advice, most recently he was an active member of the steering committee to establish the Brock Community Health Centre at my request.
I will always remember Allan and like many will miss his big Booming voice. (Thank goodness he had retired from Brock High before I went there.)
Allan, you will be missed by many.
